Polygraph Technology

Methods for determining whether or not a person is lying have been part of civilization since ancient times. Throughout history, mankind has used various combinations of common sense and tricks to determine truthfulness.

Today, polygraph examiners use two types of instrumentation: analog and computerized to scientifically determine the truth. In the United States, most examiners now use computerized instrumentation. The antiquated equipment with scrolling paper has been replaced with sophisticated algorithms and computer monitors.

To assure the most accurate results possible HNS Polygraph Services, LLC uses the most advanced polygraph equipment available, the LX4000 Computerized Polygraph, developed by Lafayette Instrument Company and used by numerous federal and state law enforcement agencies.

Lafayette Instrument Company is the world's leading manufacturer of Polygraph instrumentation and equipment, distributing credibility assessment instruments to government and military organizations throughout the world. Lafayette Instrument's windows-based computerized systems offer unparalleled ease of use and proven reliability, including software that provides the examiner with capability and functionality that no one else offers.

Today's polygraph is an instrument that records three major physiological changes:

  • cardio response, measured in terms of blood pressure variations, heartbeat and pulse wave
  • skin resistance, which is affected by the amount of perspiration;
  • respiratory activity

Together these variables provide continual data regarding an individual's sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system which are part of the autonomic division of the peripheral nervous system which controls physiological actions and reactions. All of these reactions are recorded and then analyzed by the polygraphist.
